EMPD arrests eight and recover stolen vehicle

According to the EMPD, the group had barricaded various intersections and main thoroughfares with rubble, stones and burning tyres.

The EMPD’s Public Order Policing along with the members of the Anti-Drunken Driving Unit arrested eight suspects and recovered a stolen vehicle on June 26 and 27.

The eight arrested were protesting on Leondale, Luthando and Old Heidelberg (R103) roads.

They were charged with public violence, contravening the National Road Traffic Act and convening of prohibited gathering under lockdown level three on June 26.

According to the EMPD, the group had barricaded various intersections and main thoroughfares with rubble, stones and burning tyres.

Officers specialising in crowd management and crime prevention responded.

The crowd proceeded to attack officers with rocks and foreign objects.

On June 27, officers from the EMPD Drunk Driving Unit were stopped by a pedestrian, claiming his white GWM Steed had been stolen while he was shopping.

Officers recovered the stolen vehicle in less than 15 minutes.

The arrested eight are expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
