Level 3 leads to increase in trauma cases at local hospital

Bertha Gxowa Hospital’s acting CEO Dr Arthur Manning comments on the rise in trauma cases at the hospital during lockdown Level 3.

Many welcomed the announcement that the country would enter Level 3 lockdown.

Many celebrated the increased freedoms and that alcohol would be on sale once again.

However, for Bertha Gxowa Hospital the new level of lockdown meant a rise in the number of trauma cases the hospital’s staff had to attend to daily.

“During lockdown Levels 5 and 4 the hospital averaged about three trauma-related cases per day, including the weekend,” said acting CEO Dr Arthur Manning.

“Since lockdown Level 3 came into effect, we have experienced on average eight trauma-related cases a day on weekdays and 14 trauma-related cases on weekends.

“The most common cases are assault followed by gunshots.”

Manning did not comment on whether the increase in trauma cases was related to the sale of alcohol.

The GCN also sent a query to Life Roseacres Hospital to see if they had experienced a similar increase in trauma cases since the implementation of lockdown Level 3.

Karen Landsberg, marketing coordinator, responded that the hospital was unable to comment.

“We are not currently in the position to provide you with a true picture or any statistics,” she said.
