Spoil dad with a delectable lunch this Father’s Day

Hirsch’s has a great recipe for you to try just in time for Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognise the contribution that fathers and father figures make in the lives of their children.

This day celebrates fatherhood and male parenting.

Although it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, many countries observe this day on the third Sunday in June.

“This father’s day is certainly going to be one to remember for years to come, with social distancing and level three lockdown,” said Chantelle du Plessis, public relations officer for Hirsch’s Meadowdale.

“The only way most of us will be able to celebrate with our dads is via Skype or WhatsApp video chat.

“However, if you are blessed to be home with him, then why not spoil dad with these awesome cumin-flavoured lamb steaks from Luci Hirsch’s cookbook Mum’s On The Run?”

Cumin-flavoured lamb steaks:

“Cumin may not be a spice normally associated with lamb; however, cumin-flavoured lamb steaks are a really tasty addition.

“With its sister spice coriander and the chilli, this recipe is right up my street with flavours,” said Chantelle.

Serves four to six.

Make your dad something special for Father’s Day

Ingredients:
• 6 lamb steaks, cut from the leg, or use lamb chops, cut 2.5cm thick
• Juice and rind of two lemons
• 5ml coarse red chilli flavouring mix, or ground red chilli
• 5ml ground cumin
• 5ml ground coriander
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
• 15ml honey or maple syrup

Method:
• Slash the fat edges of the lamb chops to prevent curling.
• Mix the lemon rind, red chilli flavouring mix, cumin, coriander, salt and pepper together.
• Press this mixture evenly onto the lamb steaks.
• Heat a non-stick frying pan or grill pan over a high heat. Spray with non-stick cooking spray.
• Place lamb steaks into pan. Cook for three to four minutes per side.
• Remove from pan and add lemon juice and honey or maple syrup to the juices in the pan. Cook for two or three minutes.
• Serve steaks immediately with mashed or new potatoes, cauliflower, couscous or quinoa. Pour pan juices over the steaks.
• Stir-fried vegetables make a great accompaniment to this dish.
Tips:
• Use trimmed beef rump or porterhouse steaks instead of lamb.
• Braai the chops after seasoning as above. Cook over moderately hot coals, turning with tongs, never with a fork. A fork will pierce the meat and allow those precious meat juices to run out, making the meat tougher. Heat the lemon juice and honey or maple syrup in the microwave for a minute. Pour over the chops as they are served.
