Helping to protect children in the face of Covid-19

Abcon Group Foundation donated 5 000 masks to the learners, teachers and staff of Hawk Academy.

Primrose-based Hawk Academy, like many schools across the country, opened its gates last Monday to welcome back its Grade Seven, and in this case, Grade 10 learners.

Grade 10 is the highest grade at the school at present.

However, it was not a normal day at the school as there were no smiling faces to be seen, as they were hidden behind masks.

This is just one of the safety precautions implemented at the school to protect the children against the Covid-19 virus.

To ensure all learners, teachers and staff at the school have good quality washable material masks, Abcon Group Foundation donated 5 000 masks to the school.

“We took it upon ourselves to purchase the masks, another way to support the school and do our part in protecting our society,” explained Kelly Maphuma, marketing coordinator for Abcon Group Foundation.

“We provided the school’s 1 200 learners and 47 teachers, as well as their families and the community at large with masks.

“After adopting the school in 2017, we have helped with infrastructure development at the school aimed at bettering the lives of not just the learners, but the community as well.

“We believe in providing a healthier environment for the younger generation, which we hope will lead to a positive and promising future for all of us.”

School principal Agnes Mkhonto said she was very proud of and grateful to Abcon Group Foundation for their donation.

“We are so thankful for what they have done for us in our time of need,” Agnes said.

“The school was able to secure some personal protective equipment (PPE) but not enough for the whole school.”
Agnes explained the school was thoroughly cleaned and sanitised before the learners returned and it has steps, processes and protocols in place to maintain a clean and sanitary environment going forward.

“We are blessed to have borehole water at the school and our classrooms and bathrooms are clean and fumigated,” she said.

Agnes was eager to welcome back the learners.

“We are ready for teaching and learning to continue at the school,” Agnes said.

After handing out masks to the school’s Grade 10 learners, Kelly explained the Abcon Group Foundation will continue to support the school, with plans for a computer and science centre already in the works.

“Beyond the Covid-19 pandemic are many dreams that need to be achieved, many more congratulations to be heard and many more places to see,” said Kelly.

“The pandemic might be a temporary distraction, but our hope for better things is a permanent choice we choose to keep.

“Let us be safe today so we can preserve our tomorrow.”
