Police encourage community to be crime conscious

SAPS urge community members to be aware of their surroundings at all times, to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

The SAPS continue to fight crime in their precincts but ask for the community’s help, by encouraging them to be more crime conscious.

To assist with this the SAPS have compiled a list of safety tips which they hope the community will take to heart.

They include:

  • Never walk alone and don’t talk to strangers, rather walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group, whenever possible.
  • Be on the lookout for strange cars or people and suspicious activities.Make sure your home is secure, and become a member of an armed response service.
  • Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers or have them displayed in an accessible area.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone.
However, think twice before advertising your impending absence on social media – criminals also have access to Facebook and Twitter.
  • Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them.
  • Finally the police urge the community to trust their instinct.
