Removal of illegal electricity connections sparks protest action

Residents took to the streets to voice their frustration after illegal electricity connections were removed.

Residents from the Emabondeni informal settlement in Elandsfontein took to the streets last Friday to show their frustration with the metro.

This came after metro officials visited the settlement to disconnect illegal power connections.

The Bedfordview SAPS and officers from the EMPD were on standby at the settlement in case any violence erupted while the officials were doing their work.

“Residents of the informal settlement then took to the streets to voice their frustration,” said Capt André de Jager, communications officer for the Bedfordview SAPS.

“They burnt tyres and placed rubble at the intersection of Barbara and Isando roads, barricading the roads.”

The SAPS Public Order Policing Unit was called and the residents dispersed, leaving the burning tyres behind.

“No arrests were made and the road was reopened,” de Jager said.
