Katlehong North police nab six suspects following shootout

Six suspects apprehended on charges of business robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition and attempted murder.

Katlehong North police received information that a local store had been robbed by six suspects with firearms last Sunday afternoon at about 3pm.

“Officers spotted the vehicle allegedly used by the suspects in Dlomo Street in the Nhlapo Section of Katlehong on the same day,” explained Capt Lesetja Mathobela, communications officer for the Katlehong North police.

“As police approached the vehicle, the suspects reportedly opened fire.

“A shootout between police and the suspects ensued and one of the suspects was shot in the right upper leg and right hand.”

Following the shootout, officers were able to arrest the six suspects, aged between 21 and 39 years old, on charges of business robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition and attempted murder.

During the arrests, police seized a 9mm pistol, a 9mm magazine with eight rounds of live ammunition, a black toy gun, a white BMW, a medium-sized box filled with new men’s clothing, 58 cellphones and 34 empty cellphone boxes.

“The injured suspect was taken to hospital under police guard,” said Mathobela.

“The suspects will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

“The community is encouraged to get involved in the fight against crime by reporting suspicious or criminal activity in the area.”
