Give an animal a forever home as adoptions reopen at SPCA

Under Alert Level 3 adoptions at the Germiston SPCA can once again resume

The adoption of animals, which was halted for nine weeks during alert levels 5 and 4, will resume at the Germiston and Bedfordview SPCA under Alert Level 3 from June 1.

For many animals, this means their long-awaited dream of a forever home can become a reality.

“The animals in our care will be able to find loving homes.

“We are so grateful,” said Jacques Peacock, Germiston SPCA management committee secretary.

“Many of these animals have been at our society since the onset of the lockdown and it is really time that they find homes.

“Luckily, our staff living on-site have been amazing caretakers and were able to provide the animals with
much-needed love, affection, exercise, and stimulation.

“Our volunteer photographer has already been at the society to take photos of the animals available for adoption and these will be posted on our Facebook page soon.”

The adoption process has been amended to prevent unnecessary human-to-human contact.

“Prospective adopters are welcome to view our Facebook page and contact our SPCA to confirm whether the animal is still available for adoption.

“A meet-and-greet will then be arranged in order for the family to interact with the animals,” said Peacock.

The adoption application will happen via email and the deposit is payable via an electronic funds transfer.

Once the animal is ready for collection, the contract will be signed at the SPCA and the balance paid, whereafter the animal can go home.

This limits the time spent at the SPCA to 20 minutes, in contrast to the usual approximately 40 minutes.

Strict health and safety protocols, as well as social distancing, will still apply.

Visitors will still be required to complete a register and have their temperature recorded.

“The staff of the Germiston SPCA are equipped with all the necessary personal protective equipment and they are ready to assist supporters with a smile.

“During this challenging time, we urge our community to engage and become involved with our society.

“Our society is a public benefit organisation.

“We are here to serve our community and its animals.

“We appreciate that the current economic climate will affect many of our supporters, but no  donation is too small to be put to good use,” Peacock said.

“Simple acts like sharing our social media posts, becoming a member of the SPCA or the management committee, sponsoring a kennel, or donating funds, food or blankets will make an immense difference.

“Our society is a haven for animals in need and we want the community to be part of our amazing SPCA.”

Anyone wishing to become involved with the SPCA may send an email to liaison1@spcagermiston.co.za for more information.

“The Germiston SPCA’s slogan, since last year is, ‘We care and so do you’ and we would really like to give it new meaning by community members engaging with our society more often,” Peacock said.
