Youth league offers assistance with online registration for special grants

Prince Rulashe said the community needs to come together and assist one another.

Covid-19 continues to impact disadvantaged communities even though the government has put in place a R350 special Covid-19 social relief of distress grant for unemployed people.

However, many people are unable to apply due to a number of reasons.

The ANCYL in Ward 39 embarked on a programme on May 22 to assist people in their ward to apply for the social grant.

“Some people cannot apply for the special grant because of a lack of data or they don’t have a smartphone,” said Ward 39 chairperson of the ANCYL Prince Rulashe.

He said the community needs to come together and assist one another.

“Everyone needs to help where they can.

“Even if it’s not with money but with your time, helping someone can make a difference,” he said.

The group assisted with registration, photocopying of CVs, helped with writing CVs and also with job applications.

Community members came to be assisted to register for the special Covid-19 social relief of distress grant for unemployed people. Social distancing was observed.

“The community came out in numbers.

“That showed us how many people need help in our communities,” said Rulashe.

He also thanked the Elsburg Methodist Church for allowing them to use their premises.

“Churches have been closed for worship, but we are grateful that they are opening their doors for other uses.

“We thank Past Barbara Underhill from the church for allowing us to use the church.

“We also thank the members who gave up their time to come and assist the community,” said Rulashe.

The ANCYL in Ward 39, in collaboration with the ANC and ANC Women’s League, are also holding a winter donation campaign.

“This year’s winter will be more than fighting the cold and flu.

“It will also be fighting the spread of Covid-19, and infections will rise rapidly during the winter season.

“As a ward, we want to ensure that people can keep warm; hence, the winter donation campaign,” said Rulashe.

He said there are people in the community who are unable to buy winter necessities.

“In our ward and surrounding areas we have a lot of homeless people and underprivileged people who can’t afford to keep themselves warm.

“We are calling upon companies, businesses and individuals to donate blankets, sleeping bags and any warm clothes.

“All donations will be welcomed,” said Ralushe.

Those who would like to donate or request more information can contact Rulashe on 078 533 6474 or the secretary of the ANC in Ward 39, Amos Masetlwa, on 082 941 6727.

If you have donations you would like to drop off you can do so at the Elsburg Methodist Church, situated at 23 van Riebeeck Street, Elsburg.

“We urge and encourage people to support those in need.

“If you have enough in these difficult times let us help those who are in a dire situation,” said Rulashe.
