Metro to disinfect Ekurhuleni’s 25 taxi ranks

Taxi ranks are advised to adhere to and adopt these new habits.

The City of Ekurhuleni, in partnership with the taxi industry, Outsurance and the Church of Scientology, recently launched a taxi rank disinfection campaign at the Germiston Taxi Rank.

The event was attended by the metro’s MMC for Transport Planning Clr Phelisa Nkunjana and Gauteng MEC for Transport Jacob Mamabolo.

The campaign members will visit 25 taxi ranks across the metro to disinfect them.

As many employees will be going back to work and many use public transport, this campaign is aimed at helping to make sure passengers are safe.

Nkunjana called on all stakeholders in the industry to adhere to the lockdown level four regulations.

“An estimated 1.5 million employees returned to work on May 4 due to the relaxation of restrictions from level five to level four and the majority of commuters use taxis to get to work.

“This makes the taxi industry an area where the possible spread of the virus may happen if adequate measures are not taken,” said Nkunjana.

Taxi ranks are advised to adhere to and adopt these new habits in order to ensure passengers are safe when they use their services.

“Clean and disinfect all the vehicles before passengers get into them.

“Sanitise the hands of all the passengers before they board.

“All passengers must be wearing their masks before they are allowed into the taxis,” said Nkunjana.

“Maintain social distancing while in the taxi.

“Stick to a 70 per cent load in taxis or buses.”

The taxis at the Germiston Taxi Rank were also disinfected on the day.
