Zoë helps families in need during Covid-19 pandemic

Elspark youngster helps needy families.

Elspark resident Zoë Fuller may only be 13 years old but she has a heart of gold.

The youngster told the GCN she does not like to see people hurting and that is why she got involved with her school’s feeding scheme.

The Grade Seven Laerskool Elspark learner spends her first breaks handing out food to children in need.

“There are about 50 children who need a meal every day at school,” said Zoë.

“I enjoy helping them and making sure they get something to eat.”

Zoë has also started a project at school where she collects cold drink bottle lids for the Sweetheart Foundation.

“I have two dustbins at school and people are encouraged to put the lids into them.

“I then collect them and sort them and when I have enough the foundation will be able to purchase a wheelchair for a person who needs one,” she said.

When the schools closed early and the country went into lockdown, Zoë thought a lot about the children at school who were not receiving their daily meal.

“When I heard that my father was flying his helicopter for The Covid Flight Lowveld and transporting food and medical supplies to those in need, I asked him if he could help,” Zoë said.

Zoë’s father Charles did indeed help and organised a one-ton bakkie and a car loaded full of food for her.

Zoë and her brother Enzo (11) then packed up the food into different parcels.

They had enough to feed 26 needy families and the parcels were delivered to Laerskool Elspark for distribution.

“It made me feel good to be helping,” Zoë said.

“I don’t like it when people are hurt as I don’t like being hurt myself.

“It’s nice to help people.”

Enzo said he enjoyed helping his sister with the project and will help her with other projects again.

Fred Gericke, the principal of Laerskool Elspark, said he was pleased with Zoë’s initiative.

“She is a beautiful child and loves doing things to help others.

“We are proud of her initiative and the wonderful work she did to help the families.”

At school Zoë is a prefect and enjoys playing hockey and netball, as well as participating in drama and public speaking (in Afrikaans and English).

When she goes to high school next year she will attend Helpmekaar College in Johannesburg.

“When I leave school I want to study to become an advocate and a baker,” Zoë said.

She has already put her baking skills to the test by baking cupcakes for elderly residents at SAVF Kowa Pienaar Home at the end of last year.

This year she plans to bake them cookies.

“It is nice to go down on your knees and pray at night and be thankful for what you have and that you can help others,” Zoë said.
