Food donated to the needy during Covid-19 pandemic

Vulnerable families and individuals received welcome food donations from Elsburg Masjid (mosque) last Sunday.

Many have been left vulnerable by the Covid-19 pandemic.

To help ease the mounting burden for several families and individuals in need, the Elsburg Masjid (mosque) handed out 160 food hampers last Sunday.

“This was a Muslim community project,” explained Ismail Pandor.

“It was initiated after seeing the difficulties people are facing during this pandemic. The most fragile people have been so severely impacted and we felt we had to assist.”

Ismail explained that the Jamiatul Ulama (council of Muslim theologians) and Elsburg Masjid believe it is important to share with those who do not have.

“While we are always urged to do charity work, the holy month of Ramadhan has also dawned upon the Muslim community globally.

“Apart from spending our days fasting and our nights in prayer, we are strongly encouraged to increase our giving in charitable works during this auspicious month.”

Each food hamper handed out at the Elsburg Masjid (mosque) last Sunday contained a number of food staples.

The organisation credited Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer for her selfless efforts in finding the most deserving people.

“We hope to join hands with all community members and organisations in future projects to alleviate the plight of the needy in our beautiful country and perhaps begin a cycle that will bring about positive change and develop a strong sense of unity among all our people regardless of race, colour or creed,” said Ismail.

The day’s food hampers were handed out by volunteers Moulana As’ad Pandor, As’ad Kachwee, Abu Bakr, Muhammed Siddeeq, Habibullah, Saajedullah, Husain Ahmed, Muhammed Mo’een, Mohsin Pandor, Ebrahim Muslim, Muhammed Mahmudul Hassan and Ismail, who took all precautionary measures into consideration.

“Special thanks goes to Jamiatul Ulama for initiating the hamper project, Elsburg Masjid for facilitating the project, Clr Alta de Beer, the Elsburg CPF for their ongoing support, and of course the Muslim community for their generous donations,” said Ismail.
