How to lay a complaint against the EMPD

The EMPD will investigate all complaints if the correct procedures are followed.

Members of the community who wish to lodge a complaint against the EMPD or the conduct of EMPD officers are at liberty to do so.

The public has a number of options, namely:

• By contacting the anti-corruption hotline for the metro on 0800 102 201.

• By calling 112 on a cellphone and requesting the SAPS anti-corruption unit or the 10111 number.

• A plaintiff can walk into their nearest EMPD precinct on weekdays between 8am and 3.30pm and request to speak to a precinct commander, a deputy or senior officer in charge (available at that time).

• Visit the EMPD’s head office situated in Kempton Park on the corner of Long and Margaret streets (on weekdays) and request assistance from the Internal Affairs/Integrity and Standards Unit.

The complainant should be prepared to give/write a statement, indicating what actually transpired.

The Internal Affairs team will investigate the matter, which will include obtaining a statement from the officer/s accused of wrongdoing.

A date will be set for a hearing and the presiding officer will give a verdict, considering the active and passive corruption.
