School searches yield dagga, knives and cigarettes

Elsburg SAPS members, along with other stakeholders, conducted two school searches.

School searches were recently conducted at Hoërskool Elsburg and Graceland Education Centre by members of the Elsburg SAPS.

The police officers were assisted by Social Crime Prevention Unit coordinators from different police stations in the Ekurhuleni West SAPS district (Alberton, Tokoza, Eden Park, Boksburg and Dawn Park), as well as EMPD members, officers from Boksburg Correctional Services, members of the Department of Community Safety, the EMPD K9 Unit and the Department of Education.

“At Hoërskool Elsburg, a total of 194 learners were searched and seven were found with contraband items.

“A hubbly bubbly, dagga and cigarettes were confiscated from the seven learners,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

The team then proceeded to Graceland Education Centre, where seven identified problematic classes with a total of 384 learners were searched.

“During the search, 10 packets of dagga, two knives and a loose cigarette were confiscated,” said Phooko.

“While the members were busy with the search, they received a tip-off about a house in Kruger Street in Elsburg where dagga is being sold to learners.

“The team swiftly responded and raided the house. They discovered dagga in abundance in the back rooms of the house.”

Phooko added that more drug and substance abuse awareness campaigns and school searches will be conducted to root out criminal activities among learners to promote a safe learning environment.

Elsburg SAPS station commander Col Linah Ntombizini Thethe also attended the search and thanked all the members who helped conduct the operation.
