An eight-roomed home in Hogsback Street in Rondebult was destroyed in a blaze on Monday morning.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams from Wadeville, Germiston Central and Thokoza fire stations promptly responded with three fire engines to the scene after the call was received at 10.30am.

“Upon the arrival of the teams, the house was well alight and the roof had already collapsed,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Firefighters immediately initiated defensive fire suppression because of gas cylinders exploding inside the house.

“They managed to salvage a 48kg gas cylinder from one of the rooms, which was a definite risk.”

Ntladi added that as per information obtained on the scene the fire started in the absence of any occupants in the house and no casualties were recorded on scene.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and is under investigation.
