ALERT: Threats by protesters cause Germiston depots to close, service delivery affected

Councillors have called on the metro to take urgent action to ensure services continue.

The DA in Ekurhuleni is concerned that several depots in Germiston have been locked due to protest action, affecting service delivery.

About 40 protesters have forced the depots to close, claiming they are sub-contractors and want to be appointed by the contractors.

“It is confirmed that the energy department is locked down with threats that vehicles will be set alight if they try and continue with service delivery.

“The protesters have also threatened violence,” said Ward 36 councillor Wendy Morgan.

“Sadly, residents who have been without electricity since Saturday and Sunday cannot get their electricity restored due to these protests.

“Since the early hours of Friday morning cable theft has occurred, where cables are pulled loose from the poles and then cut off at the ground, leaving residents without power.

“We have escalated this matter to the relevant departments to ensure services continue to be rendered.

“We cannot allow the City to be held hostage.”

Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer said as soon as any more information is available it will be communicated.

The GCN has requested comment from the metro on the issue.
