Feeding the community to make a difference

The Dutch Reformed Church in Elsburg holds a soup kitchen every Tuesday which feeds between 30 and 60 needy people.

For 25 years, the Dutch Reformed Church in Elsburg has been trying to make a difference within their community.

The church does this through a number of outreach projects.

Among them is the church’s soup kitchen, which operates every Tuesday.

“We would do more, but cannot afford to at the moment,” said Henda Robbie, congregation member and soup kitchen chef.

The soup kitchen is open to anyone who needs help and a warm meal.

“Depending on the time of the month, we feed between 30 and 60 people,” explained Henda.

“We have regulars who attend the soup kitchen, while others hear about us through word of mouth.

“We also have some regulars who have children in school, in those cases we will send home a takeaway meal for the children.

Danie Nel, who assists with the kitchen, agreed and added, “Sometimes people will just smell the food as they walk by and stop and ask what is happening.”

The church aims to serve the best quality food to the community, and always tries to make something different.

When the GCN visited the soup kitchen last Tuesday, delicious chicken stew, pap and cupcakes were on the menu for the day.

“I work very carefully with our budget to make sure we serve the best food we can,” said Henda.

Cheryl Nel commented on how grateful the community members, who make use of the soup kitchen, are.

“They are always so polite,” said Cheryl.

“They follow the processes and rules without hassles.”

The church is appealing to the community for donations towards the soup kitchen.

“Donations of food or money will be welcome,” said Henda.

“If I get a donation of potatoes it means I will not have to purchase that, for instance.

“We are grateful for the help.”

Danie and Cheryl Nel stir a pot of chicken stew in preparation for the Elsburg Dutch Reformed Church’s soup kitchen last Tuesday.

Community members can donate money to the soup kitchen using the following details:
