Bus driver killed in crash with truck on N3 highway in Germiston

DEMS races to the scene of accident between a bus and a truck.

A bus driver was killed instantly in a crash involving what is alleged to have been a stationary articulated truck on the N3 south highway, near the N17 split in Germiston, at about 9.30pm last Friday.

William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said that as per information on the scene only the driver was in the bus at the time of the accident.

He was due to pick up passengers in the Germiston CBD and then head to Marble Hall in Limpopo.

“The driver was declared dead by paramedics after suffering polytrauma from the crash with the truck which was transporting a huge container,” Ntladi said.

“Apparently, the bus driver did not notice that the truck was stationary and crashed into its rear.”

After assessing the scene upon their arrival, a rescue team from the Germiston Central Fire Station noticed that the bus driver was motionless and trapped behind the steering wheel of the bus.

The team used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment, namely the Jaws of Life, to recover him from the wreckage, but he was declared dead on the scene.

The truck driver escaped unharmed.

The body of the bus driver was handed over to forensic pathologists for removal to an appropriate facility.

“Four lanes of the highway were affected and had to be closed for the duration of the operation, leaving only one open for traffic flow.

“The scene was handed over to EMPD officers to conduct an investigation,” said Ntladi.
