Bright future ahead for Katlehong learners

Katlehong proudly announces the success of their matric learners who partnered with Liberty and the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology.

Students in Katlehong and Umbumbulu in KwaZulu-Natal received 211 distinctions in maths and physical science.

Liberty is the proud sponsors of the maths and science programme at the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology in Katlehong and Umbumbulu. The schools that celebrated a 100 per cent matric pass rate in 2019.

The centre received 75 distinctions in maths and 138 distinctions in physical science.

Liberty identified a need to actively support maths and physical science education in underprivileged communities in South Africa.

Over the last seven years, Liberty invested in the maths and physical science tuition programme in Katlehong and Umbumbulu.

The programme provides extra classes in mathematics, physical science and accounting for learners in Grades 10 to 12, over weekends and school holidays.

“It’s encouraging to witness the excitement and hope for the future in the eyes of these young matriculants.

“Their significant achievement and exceptional results highlight the success of the programme.

“It is proof that with the right level of support, our young learners can achieve their dreams and aspirations,” said Nomaxabiso Matjila, lead specialist corporate citizenship at Liberty.

The learners at the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology, have taken full advantage of the educational support in the programme.

They sacrificed and worked hard throughout the year, producing exceptional results, and are proud of their outstanding achievements.

The top three learners from the Katlehong centre were:

• Mathapelo Morobi with 85 per cent for maths and 98 per cent for physical science with an overall average of 91 per cent and seven distinctions.

• Ntuthuko Sicina with 98 per cent for maths and 100 per cent for physical science with an overall average of 89 per cent and six distinctions.

• Carmelia Bie with 98 per cent for maths and 100 per cent for physical science with an overall average of 86 per cent and five distinctions.

“The success of this programme is largely attributable to the commitment of the teachers who played a pivotal role in the education of these young learners.

“It is important that we work with these excellent educators to inspire, develop and educate the young people of South Africa,” Matjila said.
