Paving the way for learning

Underprivileged children in Elsburg were thrilled to receive school shoes and stationery from the ANC Youth League in Ward 39.

Elsburg children rejoiced as they were gifted with school shoes and stationery by the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Ward 39’s #Back2School Campaign at the Elsburg Methodist Church in Elsburg last Monday.

Prince Rulashe, chairperson of the ANCYL Ward 39 branch, started the #Back2School Campaign on January 10 after he received a cry for help from a member of the community.

“I was approached and asked if I possibly had an extra pair of school shoes,” said Rulashe.

“The Elsburg community has a great need for school supplies, especially school shoes, so this gave me the idea to start the campaign so we can assist the children as much as possible.”

Rulashe kicked off the proceedings by delivering a welcome and thank-you speech and afterwards he handed over the school items to the children.

Community members were thrilled when they heard about the #Back2School Campaign.

“It is so needed, you will not believe how needed it is,” said Cindy Fritz, one of the parents who benefited from the #Back2School Campaign.

“The shops are getting so expensive and it is making it impossible for us to even buy a few pencils for our children.”

“Our struggles are severe and it is so great that our call for help was answered,” said Lisa White, a member of the community who benefited from the #Back2School Campaign.

Companies that sponsored the campaign were Elsburg Fish ’n Chips and Wadefin Trading.

Other individuals who donated school items were the secretary of the ANC Ward 39 branch Amos Maset and members of the ANC Ward 39 branch Moonira Ramathula and Nolundi Shezi.

The sponsored items included school shoes, school uniforms, school socks, school bags, pencil cases, pencil crayons, hard-cover exercise books, flip files, colouring-in books, homework books, wax crayon twisters, pens and pencils.

Adri Germishuys, a member of the community who also benefited from the campaign, was incredibly thankful for the help of the ANCYL.

“I am just extremely grateful for the stationery and the pair of school shoes as it was desperately needed,” said Germishuys.

Rulashe urged Elsburg members to contact him if they need any help regarding school uniforms and stationery.

“I am a public servant and people can contact me anytime,” said Rulashe.
