Taxi full of passengers crashes with truck on Heidelberg Road, near Rondebult

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responds to serious collision on Heidelberg Road.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) personnel rushed to the scene of a collision at the intersection of the R544 and Heidelberg Road, near Rondebult, in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, January 21).

“Personnel responded to an accident which reportedly took place at 4.40am,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“The crash involved an articulated truck and a taxi full of passengers, three of which were found trapped inside the vehicle following the incident.

“One of the passengers was declared dead on scene upon the arrival of emergency services, while a second died during the cut-out rescue was in progress.

“The third was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

“The remaining passengers were assessed and transported to various hospitals across Ekurhuleni by ambulance.”

DEMS members worked hard on the scene.

The truck driver escaped with minimal injuries and the taxi driver was among the casualties and in a stable condition.

The cause of the accident is still unknown.

“The EMPD and SAPS are investigating the cause of the accident,” said Ntladi.
