Keep your cool on the roads as you head back to work and school

SAPS offer motorists some handy tips as community members start a new year of work and school.

Many residents will be getting back into their commuting routine soon, which mean more traffic on the roads.

With this in mind the SAPS has offered motorists some helpful tips for dealing with aggressive driving.

The followings aspects might trigger aggressive behaviour:

• Following too closely to the vehicle in front of you.

• Passing a vehicle on the left.

• Cutting in and out of traffic and failing to signal while engaging in multiple lane changes.

• Crossing safety markings while merging onto ramps.

• Failing to yield at ramps and intersections.

• Violating railroad crossings.

• Displaying or using a weapon.

• Displaying aggressive or obscene gestures.

• Slow moving traffic in fast lanes.

The SAPS suggests that the community respond by:

• Do not react to provocation.

• Stay away from erratic drivers.

• Avoid eye contact with an aggressive driver.

• Use your hooter sparingly.

• Do not flash your headlights.

• Do not make obscene gestures.

• Do not change lanes without using your indicators.

• Do not drive too closely to the vehicle in front of you.

• Do not block lanes.
