MKNC enter the new year united and determined

Members from the Umkhonto weSizwe National Council (MKNC) are still awaiting feedback from the metro months after handing over a list of demands.

Members from the Umkhonto weSizwe National Council (MKNC) from branches across Gauteng met at the Germiston Civic Centre, recently, for a special cadres’ assembly.

“This special event saw 300 members from Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, West Rand, Greater Johannesburg and Tshwane, coming together,” explained Mogotlane.

“The day was a great success and we managed to consolidate our desire to unite and preserve our history, heritage and legacy.”

During the event members discussed unity and the importance of credible and accountable leadership which they hope to carry into the new year.

The assembly was held after a peaceful demonstration, outside the Germiston Civic Centre, by MKNC, in October, 2019.

The organisation’s members, dressed in the bright yellow and green of the ANC, held up signs listing their demands and handed over a petition with a number of grievances, demands and dissatisfaction, to the metro.

Among the demands were:

• Recognition of MKNC in Ekurhuleni.

• Employment of MKNC military veterans within the region.

• Implementation of the ANC’s 54th National Conference resolution that Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) and MKNC have equal representation.

• Implementation of the Vukuphile Empowerment Programme within the region.

• Participation of MKNC in the ANC regional structure.

• Deployment of eight MKNC military veterans within Ekurhuleni as liaison officers.

Since the demonstration MKNC has received no feedback from the metro, according to spokesperson Eugene Mogotlane.

“To date not a single demand was addressed by the metro. said Mogotlane.

“On the day of our protest a meeting took place between MKNC’s regional executive committee and the ANC regional office bearer (ROB).

“During the meeting all our demands were tabled and discussed and it was agreed (by both parties) that the ANC ROB needed time to work through the demands and consult with different departments within the metro.

“We were promised feedback would be given after 30 days.

“To date no follow-up meeting has been scheduled, and attempts to reach the office of the ANC have been unsuccessful,” said Mogotlane.

Mogotlane explained that moving forward the regional leadership of the MKNC military veterans plan to go back to their constituency to decide on a plan of action.

The GCN sent a query to the metro to ask when the MKNC’s demands would be addressed, but at the time of going to press no response had been received.
