Children enjoy a day of Christmas spoils

Itemba Soup Kitchen treats children to a fun-filled Christmas party.

Children’s laughter filled the air at the Primrose East Dutch Reformed Church, recently, as they enjoyed a special Christmas party.

The event was hosted by Itemba Soup Kitchen and made the festive season a little brighter for the 34 children who attended the event.

The soup kitchen was founded in 1999 and has been making a difference in the community for 20 years.

“The magician was definitely a big hit, judging by the reactions of the children,” said Jenny Schneignsz, who runs the soup kitchen.

“I think it was the first time many of them had seen a magician.”

When asked why the soup kitchen had decided to host the event, Jenny explained, “We wanted to give the children a party because it’s a fun thing to do especially at the end of a school year,” she said.

“But, also many of the children will not get the opportunity to celebrate Christmas in a big way, so we thought we’d make it special for them.”

Jenny admits she could not have planned the party without the help of a number of sponsors.

“There are a lot of kind-hearted people who offered their services and ensured that this party was a success,” she said.

She thanked Tina Moodley and her team from ST Tent Hire and Event Supplies for the tables and décor, Melissa Mare from Adventure Kids for the jumping castles, Baldie the Magical Kids Entertainer for the magic show, Joanne MacGregor for the prizes used during the games of pass the parcel, Anelia Bothma for the laser cut Christmas trees which each child got to take home, Vivienne King and Tony Erasmus for the ice creams, Bronwyn van Zyl for the cupcakes and Melissa van Zyl and her daughter Valkyrie Rosner for the party packs and watermelon.

“We also received donations of clothing and non-perishable food which we are grateful for,” said Jenny.

The soup kitchen welcomes donations from the community, such as soup ingredients, fruit and vegetables, fresh bread, crockery and cutlery, second-hand clothing, shoes and toys.
