Ruby reaches her magical 100th-year milestone

Not one, but two, birthday parties for Ruby Wheeler.

Ruby Wheeler was surprised when she was presented with an early birthday party last Friday at the Germiston Association for the Aged (GAFA) Protea Old Age Home in Primrose.

Ruby was born in England on December 7, 1919.

She moved to South Africa in 1948 and settled in Alberton and spent her whole life working for other people.

“I was involved in charity work and I did lots of knitting and always made sure the homeless people received something from me,” said Ruby

Ruby had three children, daughters Valerie Else and Margaret Olivier, and a son, Norman.

“My brother Norman unfortunately died 15 or more years ago,” said Valerie.

Ruby also has seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

At the party, Ruby got a sneak peak of her birthday cake, a surprise that was donated by Pick n Pay Primrose.

“I want to cut the cake on my birthday,” said Ruby.

“We wanted to do a surprise party for Ruby’s birthday,” said Ani Venter, general manager of GAFA.

“Ruby did not want to make a big fuss about being a 100 years old and she wanted a quiet birthday, but we decided to hold a surprise birthday party for her because she is special to us and we love her.”

Ruby’s family celebrated her birthday with her last Saturday, and also brought cupcakes for her to enjoy.
