16 Days of Activism: Children taught more about gender-based violence

Elsburg police educate the community during 16 Days of Activism with special school visit.

A team from the Elsburg Police Station visited Busy Bee Crèche in Elspark, recently, as part of their 16 Days of Activism activities.

During the visit officers from the Elsburg police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit, Elsburg SAPS Sector One manager and Elsburg SAPS communication team taught the children about a number of different crimes, including gender-based violence.

“The children were also taught what to do when faced with abuse, bullying and theft,” explained Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.

“Const Erin Palmer (Elsburg SAPS Sector One manager) interacted with the school’s 45 children, teaching them the police’s emergency number.

“She even taught the children an easy way to remember the 10111 number using their fingers.”

She further urged the learners to scream for help if they are ever attacked.

“Don’t stop screaming until someone comes to help you,” said Palmer.

Before leaving, the police encouraged the children to report suspicious and criminal activities to the police.
