Man tries to bribe cops to avoid arrest in Germiston CBD

Alleged fake passport, ID photos and airport stamps found in man’s car.

While out on their usual patrol in the Germiston CBD last Tuesday at 11am, members of the Germiston Task Team spotted a suspicious-looking white Honda Civic.

The car was being driven by a 35-year-old Chinese man and Consts Tebogo Choung and Ofentse Korapetsi stopped him at the intersection of Jack and President streets.

“They searched the man and the vehicle and found a number of items in the car, including a passport which is suspected to be fake, an undisclosed amount of money, ID photos of many Chinese people, two laptops, permits suspected to be fake, and OR Tambo International Airport and China stamps which are used when a person comes through an airport.

“When the officers told the suspect they were going to arrest him on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property, he allegedly tried to bribe them with cash,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston SAPS.

“The man was promptly arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property, bribery and fraud.”

He was detained at the Germiston Police Station and was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

“It is suspected that the man is one of a group of people who help Chinese nationals in the country when their permits or passports expire,” said Mabunda.
