Flying Squad members arrest man in possession of stolen vehicle

Officers chase down driver of allegedly stolen bakkie.

Germiston Flying Squad members were in a chase with the driver of a stolen white bakkie recently.

The chase took place from Boksburg to Moshoeshoe section, in Katlehong, and ended with the driver of the vehicle crashing into a fence at the Lindelani Train Station.

The officers received a complaint about the 1400 bakkie that was allegedly stolen at a mall in Lambton.

Information received was that the bakkie had been spotted driving around Boksburg.

“They travelled to Boksburg and found the bakkie and signalled to the driver to pull over,” said Const Ntombikayise Ngcobo, communications officer for the Germiston Flying Squad.

“The driver did not stop. He continued driving recklessly and the officers gave chase.”

The suspect drove the bakkie to Katlehong and thought he had given the police the slip in the traffic.

However, police vehicles were waiting for him and as he tried to escape in the Moshoeshoe section he failed to drive properly around a sharp curve in the road and hit the fence at the train station.

“The police members approached the bakkie and found a 27-year-old man inside it,” said Ngcobo.

“They helped the man out of the bakkie and called for medical assistance for him.

“He was then arrested on a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.”

The man is due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon, and the vehicle was taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni.

The Germiston Flying Squad’s acting unit commander, Capt Rhodes Moss, commended the members for the arrest and gave a stern warning to criminals that police members will have a zero tolerance approach this festive season in the fight against crime and in ensuring the safety of South African citizens.

“Members of the public are encouraged to download the MySAPSApp on any iPhone or android to have easy access to the police to, among others, provide tip-offs or one may provide information to the SAPS Crime Stop line by calling 086 00 10111.

“Callers can remain anonymous and all information will be treated in the strictest confidence,” said Ngcobo.
