Crime prevention in the spotlight at soup kitchen

Special guests at Itemba Soup Kitchen created awareness about crime.

Itemba Soup Kitchen, based at the Primrose East Dutch Reformed Church, shared more than soup to the less fortunate on Wednesday.

Focusing on community growth and safety, members of the Primrose SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) and the Primrose SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk joined in by spreading awareness regarding crime, gender-based violence, women and child abuse and bullying in schools.

Before the soup was served, VEC member Vanessa Smith explained to the people that crime, women and child abuse and bullying in schools are a growing concern.

“We are here to help you,” said Vanessa, who enthusiastically informed the crowd that help is always available to those who have experienced or been victims of crime.

Tshegofatso Maponya, the acting public relations officer for the Primrose SAPS Youth Desk, spoke about the importance of crime prevention in the youth.

They focus on school talks, campaigns and awareness in the community, child safety, hijackings and crime prevention.

Sgt Styles Maome, the communications officer for the Primrose police, ended the talks with a presentation on the importance of recognising gender-based violence.

He said whether you are a man or a woman and you have been a victim of gender-based violence you must report it at the police station so that you can be helped.

Jenny Schneigansz, who runs Itemba Soup Kitchen, presented the VEC with a toiletry parcel to help those in need.

The day ended with 99 people receiving a delicious bowl of warm soup, and the leftovers being handed out to them to take home for their families.

Any donations of food, clothing and toys are welcome.
