“It is reported that a group of men, three with firearms, entered the store and demanded to be taken to the safe by the  manager but were told there was no safe on site,” explained Const Maxwell Mabunda, the communications officer for the Germiston SAPS.

“The criminals took an undisclosed amount of money from the store’s till points.

“Three suspects also went to the Tops store where they took an undisclosed amount of money and cigarettes.”

Though several shots were fired during the execution of the crime, Mabunda confirmed no SPAR employees or customers were injured during the robbery.

“However, an SW Security reaction officer was shot and killed on the scene,” Mabunda said.

“According to an eye witness the reaction officer attempted to escape, but could not.”
