Primrose police close illegal taverns in Makause and Marathon

Selling liquor without a licence lands two suspects in trouble in Primrose.

During a Primrose police operation in the Makause and Marathon informal settlements last Saturday, officers closed two illegal taverns and arrested two men.

The suspects, aged 31 and 36 years respectively, were arrested on a charge of dealing in liquor without a licence.

“Police identified the taverns, which at first looked like tuck shops, while on a foot patrol in each of the informal settlements,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“At each tavern, officers stopped, observed and identified community members buying alcohol before approaching the establishment, introducing themselves and asking the owner to provide their liquor licence.

“When the suspects were unable to provide one they were arrested.”

The men were taken to the Primrose Police Station, where they were released on a warning after paying admission of guilt fines.

“The whole country is facing a challenge of gender-based violence and we believe that alcohol abuse could be a contributing factor to cases like domestic violence,” said Maome.

“We, therefore, appeal to our community to refrain from selling liquor without a licence.”
