Birthday celebrations at Rest-a-While

Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged members celebrated the centre’s 53rd birthday with a special party.

Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged has become a household name in Germiston, and the centre celebrated its 53th birthday on Thursday with a special party.

The centre started when a group of retired women started playing cards together.

They came together once a week and played cards over a cup of tea, and discussed the possibility of expanding the group to include more people.

The founders did some research and soon discovered that there was a great need for a group like this in the community of Germiston.

From these humble beginnings, the centre has grown and is now under the management of Trudy Carreira, who took the reins from Ward 36 councillor Wendy Morgan.

Members were entertained by the musical talents of Dave Nieuwenhuys while enjoying a selection of delicious treats.

They also posed for photos in their fancy masks.

Trudy is appealing to the elderly of the community to come and join the centre as members.

Rest-a-While hosts several fun activities each week, including skills development mornings, bingo and line dancing.

In addition, the centre hosts special celebrations for days such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day, as well as Easter and Christmas.

For more information on the centre, upcoming events and services call Trudy or Michelle Bezuidenhout on 011 828 3059.
