Young man allegedly clocked driving at 202km/h on N3 highway in Germiston

EMPD officers crack down on speeding.

The EMPD High Speed Unit arrested five alleged speedsters on the weekend.

They conducted speed law enforcement on Saturday in the Alberton area, on the R59 (Sybrand van Niekerk) south highway between Kliprivier and the R550 and on Sunday on the N3 south highway near the Rand Airport turn-off.

The special operation took place between 5am and 11am.

“A 32-year-old man driving a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan claiming he was late for work was arrested at 5.50am on Saturday when he was clocked at the excessive speed of 170km/h on that 120km/h stretch of the R59 highway,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD media liaison officer.

“He was escorted to the Brackendowns Police Station and charged with reckless and negligent driving.”

The motorist is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

A speed law enforcement operation on Sunday yielded a further four alleged speedsters.

The drivers were arrested for exceeding the speed limit on the N3 highway near the Rand Airport Road off-ramp in Germiston.

The arrested drivers clocked speeds of between 163 and 202km/h.

“A 21-year-old man driving an Opel SUV was clocked at the breakneck speed of 202km/h.

“He stated that he was rushing home,” said Mokheseng.

“It was later established that he took the Opel (belonging to his parents) for a joy ride without permission.”

All the arrestees were charged at the Germiston Police Station with reckless and negligent driving.

The drivers will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
