Red Cross helps feed displaced foreign nationals

Germiston Red Cross needs food donations to continue their work of delivering aid.

The Germiston branch of the South African Red Cross Society has been cooking up delicious meals for the past week.

The meals are served to displaced foreign nationals who are being housed at the DH Williams and Tsholo halls in Katlehong.

Mundau Takalani, Thomas Mufamabi and Rita Mangnato from the Germiston Red Cross prepare the pap which was served as part of the lunch prepared for displaced foreign nationals being housed at the DH Williams and Tsholo halls in Katlehong on Wednesday.

Manager of Germiston Red Cross Barbara Jensen said staff and volunteers from the society have been preparing lunch for 249 displaced foreign nationals at DH Williams Hall and 113 at Tsholo Hall.

Ten volunteers and six staff members would then go to the halls to serve lunch to the affected foreign nationals.

“We prepared basic meals, including a starch, protein and vegetables, for the people,” said Barbara.

In order to make more meals, Germiston Red Cross is appealing to the community and businesses to donate food (both non-perishable and perishable).

Viola Chiwomba (course assessor, front) and her ancillary health-care students from the Germiston Red Cross helped prepare, cook and serve the meals for displaced foreign nationals. This served part of their practicals for community development.

Donations can be dropped off at the Red Cross offices situated on the corner of Driehoek Road and Campbell Street, Driehoek, or call Barbara on 011 873 9009 to arrange for collection or for more information.
