Police warn elderly to be aware of their safety and to take precautions

After two house robberies the Elsburg SAPS are warming elderly citizens to take care of their safety.

The Elsburg police are empowering the elderly by informing them of safety measures that they can put in place to stay safe.

The initiative comes after house robberies took place in Elspark and Elsburg.

In one of the robberies an elderly woman was seated in her dining room when she heard a noise inside the house.

She thought it may be her epileptic child.

“To her surprise she was amazed when two unknown males informed her that ‘this is a robbery, if you move you will be hurt’,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

The suspects went to the bedroom and stole jewellery and R20 000 in cash and fled the scene on foot.

The police are advising the elderly to be alert at all times and to take note of these precautionary measures:

• Don’t sit inside your house with your security gates unlocked or open.

• Make sure that valuables are not in plain sight.

• If you have a panic button keep it on your person at all times.

• Get to know your neighbours so if there is a problem you can call for help.

• Make sure your outside gates are locked.

“The suspects are still at large and anyone with information is asked to contact the Elsburg police on 071 675 6894 or to call 10111,” said Phooko.
