Germiston SPCA to hold rabies vaccination drive

The Germiston SPCA encourages all pet owners to vaccinate their pets against rabies.

World Rabies Day takes place on September 28.

To mark the day the Germiston SPCA is holding a vaccination drive along with an awareness campaign educating people about rabies in animals.

The SPCA’s vaccination drive will see rabies vaccinations being given to animals at a cost of only R35 per animal.

The society said that prevention is the only solution and it is, therefore, appealing to the community to have their pets vaccinated.

Rabies vaccinations will be administered at the Germiston SPCA, situated in Junction Road, Driehoek, between 8am and 1pm on September 28.

Bookings are not necessary and the SPCA will work on a walk-in basis.

It remains the responsibility of the owners to ensure that their pets are healthy and by doing so, preventing cruelty and suffering.

The Germiston SPCA shared the following information regarding rabies:

• Rabies is a disease that affects the brain and leads to the death of the person or animal infected with this incurable disease.

• The virus occurs in the saliva of rabid animals. If bitten by a rabid animal, a person can get infected.

• Symptoms vary, but include a change in behaviour, aggression, salivation and paralysis.

• There is no cure for rabies. Prevention is the only solution and the SPCA, therefore, appeals to the community to get their pets vaccinated.
