Gauteng leaders pointed to criminal motives and fake news as catalyst for the violence and looting of shops.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt-General Elias Mawela, Premier David Makhura, MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi and Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina addressed the media on the state of the province today following the unrest and looting of shops in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni earlier this week.

Several shops were looted in Johannesburg including Germiston CBD, Primrose, Elsburg, Katlehong, Malvern, Jeppestown from Sunday.

Makhura said those targeted also included South African shop owners.
