HOD welcomes new shift managers

Sam Sibande, the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) head of department, promotes 19 firefighters.

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) head of department, Sam Sibande, recently promoted 19 firefighters to shift managers.

This team, comprised of eight female officers will lead different fire stations across Ekurhuleni.

All the promoted firefighters were given new rank markings and welcomed to their new roles by Sam, DEMS divisional head Mhlengi Makhubalo and operational manager Lifty Ngoepe on Thursday morning.

Sam reiterated the importance of being a dedicated and passionate firefighter to the newly appointed managers and urged them to keep their focus in their line of duty.

The entire assemblage confirmed commitment and dedication to their new roles.

“We will hit the ground running and immediately add more value to the service,” said Puleng Xoki, one of the new shift managers.

Makhubalo placed the rank marking to individuals as a symbol of leadership in their new roles.

Earlier this month, at the Women in Uniform gala dinner, held to honour women who walk the extra mile to serve residents in the metro, at the Alberton Civic Centre, city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi called on the women in emergency services to take advantage of the metro’s vision of empowerment.

“The city manager urged women in the metro to equip themselves academically and professionally and these promotions are definitely in line with the metro’s vision to empower its employees, especially women in its workforce,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.
