Watch: Soulful tunes go straight to the heart

Musician shares his story with soup kitchen beneficiaries.

Local blues musician Nico Lawrence, aka Smoke the Guitarist, joined forces with the Itemba Soup Kitchen in Primrose East last Friday morning to share some soulful tunes with over 150 underprivileged community members.

Nico is about to embark on a whirlwind (two-week) tour of Argentina, where he has been invited to play by an Argentinean band, Yamil Jacobo Trio band, who will return to SA with him to play at the Durban International Blues Festival, as well as some venues in Johannesburg.

Smoke also testified for the soup kitchen visitors, sharing how he had come through some rough times in his life to get to where he is today.

It was a wonderful morning enjoyed by all.

Itemba Soup Kitchen has been assisting people in the Primrose community for over 20 years.

Jenny Schneignsz and her husband Frans, together with their capable team and with the support of generous donors, serve hot soup four mornings a week from the Primrose East Dutch Reformed Church situated on the corner of Fir Avenue and Belhambra Road.

They regularly assist people with food parcels, clothing, toiletries and toys when possible.

These services are all dependent on donations received from the public.

Just last month they served a record amount of soup and bread to people in need, through the kindness of donors and the generosity of a few local businesses.

The guests were warmed when Smoke, accompanied by local estate agent and long-standing community development volunteer Max Katz on harmonica, entertained the crowd with their brand of hearty blues and original music.
