The Elsburg SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, together with the Women’s Network and Men for Change, celebrated their 67 minutes for Mandela Day carrying out a variety of initiatives in the Roodekop informal settlement.
“We wanted to continue the legacy of Nelson Mandela, a man who showed compassion to all who lived in this country, by showing this community that we love them and care about their well-being,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.
Their motive was to share a soup kitchen and bread with them and also to hand out clothes to the needy community.
The Elsburg Police Station commander, Col Linah Thethe, thanked all the members who contributed to making the day a success by giving back to the community.
“Together we can do more,” she said.
“We can make provision to keep this as an ongoing project.”
Elsburg SAPS Sector One manager Const Erin Palmer identified two households in her policing area which she felt needed help with food packages, and she visited the homes with her team to give back, all in the spirit of Mandela Day.
