Rest-a-While Service Centre for the Elderly was a hive of activity on Thursday, as members, centre management and organisations celebrated Mandela Day.

The morning started with a special pamper session for the elderly residents, courtesy of Beauty Hub Academy Johannesburg.

Beauty therapists from the academy spoiled the centre’s members with manicures, pedicures, haircuts and styling, and neck and back massages

“The Gauteng Department of Social Development sponsored these pamper visits as a way for the students, who have passed their courses, to give back to the community,” explained Trudy Carreira, Rest-a-While manager.

“We think this is an amazing initiative by the government as it is something not many elderly citizens have money for and the spoils mean so much to them.

“To see the joy and appreciation on their faces is just wonderful.”

The Red Bin Brigade Primrose, in conjunction with Mamba Security, also visited the centre and served soup and rolls to Primrose residents in need of a warm meal.

“It was heart warming to see the enjoyment on the people’s faces as they had their cup of soup and a bread roll,” Hennie van der Merwe, chairperson of the Red Bin Brigade, Primrose Branch.

Shoprite Primrose donated several cakes for Rest-a-While members to enjoy during the festivities.

Cherrywood Estates also did their part on the day by donating grocery hampers for the elderly in need.

“We are so grateful for all the support we have received,” said Trudy.

“We had a wonderful and busy day.”
