Police investigate Katlehong Primary School fire

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters alerted to fire by local ambulance crew.

Two classrooms were torched at Katlehong Primary School in Katlehong South last Thursday morning.

“Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters received the call at 6.52am from a local ambulance crew who had seen the fire while responding to another call,” explained William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“A fleet of four fire engines from the Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge fire stations swiftly responded to the fire.

“On arrival, part of the roof had already collapsed and flames were spreading to the entire building.”

The teams were able to extinguish the blaze and no casualties were recorded on scene.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined and still the subject of investigation,” said Ntladi.

Katlehong SAPS communications officer Capt Mega Ndobe confirmed that police were investigating the cause of the fire.

“A case of arson has been opened and no arrests have been made,” said Ndobe.

When asked if the fire had been set by protesters in the area, Ndobe said: “I cannot confirm these reports.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
