The Department of Environmental Resources Management in the metro hosted Grade R learners from different early childhood development centres from the southern region of Ekurhuleni at their Environmental Awareness and Child Protection Week programme last Thursday.
Held at Rondebult Bird Sanctuary, the programme saw an estimated 100 learners from Beloved Kids Day Care, Our Angels Day Care and Qhaphelani Early Childhood Development Centre take part.
Through this programme the department wanted to teach children from a young age the importance of taking care of their immediate surroundings, recycling, water conservation and creating a culture of identifying elements, which cause harm to the environment.
Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police, as well as a representative from the Department of Community Safety, Matete Mmola, and Pearl Manqele from the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board, all gave engaging presentations about child protection and where children can report crimes against them and bullying.
