Hawk Academy grows with the cut of a ribbon

Hawk Academy is growing from strength to strength with the help of Abcon Group Foundation and Redefine Properties.

The Abcon Group Foundation (AGF), a division of Abland, in partnership with Redefine Properties, donated four new containers which will serve as classrooms and additional ablution facilities for the learners at Hawk Academy.

This announcement came at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the school last Wednesday.

Although a number of stakeholders and guests were disappointed in learning the executive mayor of the metro, Clr Mzwandile Masina, would not be attending the ceremony, the disappointment was short lived as the main agenda to officially open the classrooms and ablution facilities kicked off in the marquee.

Hawk Academy was founded in 2015 by husband and wife Sipho and Agnes Mkhonto, and registered with the Department of Education in 2016.

Abland, in partnership with Redefine Properties, announced the donation of four new containers which will serve as classrooms and additional ablution facilities at Hawk Academy in Primrose. Londiwe Mthembu (managing director of Abcon Group Foundation), Agnes Mkhonto (the school’s principal) and Andrew Konig (CEO of Redefine Properties) get ready to cut the ribbon.

The school started their operations in a mine office building situated along Main Reef Road in Primrose and needed swift development to be suitable for school facilities.

Redefine Properties, in partnership with Abland, donated 6.5 hectres of land towards the development of the school that now accommodates 1 200 learners from Grade R to Grade 12.

AGF was introduced to the school in 2017 and has since fully committed most of its socio-economic development proceeds towards the school.

AGF previously donated a fully equipped library and a 20 000-litre water tank to the school.

Grade R learners at Hawk Academy entertained guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony last Wednesday.

Together with Redefine, they also donated 36 toilets and two additional classrooms in the past two years.

“Children in the area who had nowhere to go for any schooling have found a new home to go to, not only for schooling but to play in the open school premises,” said Londiwe Mthembu, managing director of AGF.

“Most of the families residing in the Delport and Marathon informal settlements rely on government grants and cannot afford the price of education and transport, while some are not documented and, therefore, do not qualify for grants.

“The school has become a haven of hope in these communities.”

The Grade Four learners, who had been attending class in a pole tent on the school premises, can now avoid the winter cold and rainy weather in their new and warm classrooms, which will be conducive to their schooling career.

“We recognise the unique social responsibility that comes with being a leading South African Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT),” said Marijke Coetzee, head of marketing and communications at Redefine Properties.

“Our aim is to manage and create spaces in a way that changes lives and contributes to the development of more collaborative communities in and around our buildings.”

AGF has played a pivotal role in raising funds to assist Hawk Academy with infrastructure development and maintenance, and continues to be actively involved with various programmes at the school and in the surrounding communities.

Inside one of the new classrooms donated by Abcon Group Foundation (AGF), in partnership with Redefine Properties, last Wednesday is Sipho Mkhonto (director of Hawk Academy) and 60 Grade Four learners.

These programmes include donating stationery, toys and toiletries, as well as feeding schemes, painting and cleaning of the facilities, book drives, and various employee volunteer programmes.

“This is a real milestone,” said Sipho Mkhonto, director of the school.

“When we receive such donations and aid from reputable companies, it takes me back to the years when we had no school account, no learners and a mass of naysayers.

“When people look at our school from the outside, they judge us as a lowly school; however, I urge everyone to enter and sit through our classes and bear witness to the quality of education we offer.

“We come from a reality where community members were laughing not only at us, but the parents who chose to enrol their children in our school.

“We were a joke and given a life span of three months, and here we are years later revealing our new classrooms, depicting growth.”
