Fourteen youngsters to experience the world of drones

Two students will win scholarships to become drone pilots.

The metro, in partnership with Mzansi Aerospace Technologies, will host the metro’s first Drone Build-A-Thon and Demonstration event tomorrow (June 12) at Tsakane Stadium from 9am to 4pm.

The event, which is being held to enhance access to economic and educational opportunities to the youth, is part of the metro’s Youth Month commemoration activities.

A group of 14 youths who are currently studying engineering, technology or any field in the drone industry have been selected from various TVET colleges in Ekurhuleni to participate.

The two most promising participants (one male and one female) in the Drone Build-A-Thon will be awarded a scholarship to train to become drone pilots at one of the institutions accredited by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

The Drone Build-A-Thon is an event that promotes drone industry opportunities to university and TVET college students and graduates.

The event will expose them to drone industry players for possible job opportunities and start-up business opportunities in the sector.

The event includes drone demonstrations by some of the outstanding drone companies.

Students who are aspiring to be drone pilots and technicians will get an opportunity to network with leading industry players, accomplished drone pilots and city officials.
