Charity comes to the aid of the needy

Winter relief packages to better the lives of the needy.

Members and volunteers of the Buddhist compassion relief Tzu-chi Foundation South Africa have busied themselves with placing smiles on the faces of the needy in the past few weeks.

The Taiwan-based charity rolled out its winter relief campaign in aid of an estimated 1 000 residents from the Makause, Deport and Marathon informal settlements, as well as Dukathole.

The foundation is known for its contributions to bettering social and community services in impoverished communities.

Ekurhuleni Primary School was the first school on the charity drive to host the foundation, followed by Primrose Primary School and Leeuwpoort Primary School.

Donations to each recipient included 10kg of rice, blankets, stationery packs, basic toiletries and shoes.

The schools’ teachers, children and their parents also all participated in mentally and spiritually uplifting activities, all courtesy of Tzu-chi Foundation, whose core missions are charity, medicine, education and culture.
