Senior citizens attacked and mugged while jogging in Lambton

Stay alert and cautious while out on the roads enjoying your run.

Joggers are often seen out and about on the city’s roads enjoying a run and upping their fitness levels.

This is also the case for Marshall and Sarah Hactney (both 78).

The couple, who has been running for 33 years and competed in Comrades Marathons, Marshall has completed 13 and Sarah has completed 10, enjoy their early morning jog.

However, on Thursday, their run turned into a nightmare as they were attacked and mugged while jogging in Ninth Avenue, Lambton.

“We jog every morning at 5.30am,” said Marshall.

“As we were running down Ninth Avenue near the open veld, we were approached by three men who stopped us.

“We thought they wanted to ask us for directions, but they took out knives and threatened us.”

Marshall told the GCN the biggest of the trio came at him and the other two grabbed his wife.

“We only had our running watches on and I was also wearing my wedding band,” Marshall said.

“The man had me on the ground and demanded I take off the band and give it to them otherwise he would kill me.”

The couple has been married for 59 years and are incredibly upset about the loss of the wedding ring.

Marshall suffered grazing to his arms and Sarah bruising in the attack.

A case of assault and robbery has been opened at the Germiston Police Station for investigation.

“A lot of joggers use the area.

“Some jog in big groups, but others jog as a couple or by themselves,” Marshall said.

“We are concerned that this will happen to other people and warn all runners to be alert and cautious when out on the roads.”
