The speaker of Ekurhuleni Council, Ald Patricia Kumalo, chaired an extra-ordinary council sitting for May, on Thursday, at the Germiston Council Chambers.
Kumalo sent condolences to the family of EMPD officer Chief Supt Roelof Barnard who died tragically recently after he was electrocuted at a substation in Estera.
She also extended condolences to the families of those who died last Monday in the multi-vehicle collision near the Barry Marais off-ramp, in Vosloorus.
Many involved in the accident are believed to have been residing in the metro’s Ward 64 and Ward 47.
Congratulatory messages from the speaker of council went to Anastasia Motaung, as well as two former MMC’S Robert Mashego and Petrus Mabunda.

The metro’s former MMC for Transport Mabunda was announced as the Chairperson of the Economy Cluster, on Wednesday, in the ANC’s Gauteng caucus executive to be led by Mzi Khumalo, the party’s chief whip.
While Motaung, who headed the Gender, Children, Youth and People with Disabilities standing committee and Robert Mashego, the former MMC for Infrastructure Services, took their places within the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on May 23.
Leading on the agenda at the meeting was the request for the adoption of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management draft by-law as the by-law of the metro as required in terms of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act, 2013 (Spluma) read together with the Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (MSA).

This was followed by a report on the appointment of a group chief financial officer following the resignation of Gugu Malaza, as well as a report on the appointment of a head of department in the Department of Human Settlements.
A concern within council arose from the DA councillors who suggested that the metro be more efficient in their recruitment processes, to ensure the best candidates are selected for the proposed jobs.
The Health and Social Development oversight committee’s report on the unaudited quarterly SDBIP report for quarter two of the 2018/2019 financial year and the report on councillors’ declarations for the 2018/2019 financial year were also among reports tabled on the day.
