Three-car pile-up in Lambton leaves 12 people hospitalised

Ekurhuleni DEMS responds to accident in Lambton where two adults and 10 children were injured.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded to a call, logged at 7.30am, reporting an accident on the corner of Sinclair Road and Fifth Avenue in Lambton on Friday morning.

Upon arrival, it was found that among the three vehicles involved in the accident, one was a Toyota Condo transporting children to a nearby school.

Two children with minor injuries were transported to Union Hospital in Alberton.

Eight other children who also suffered minor injuries were treated at Bertha Gxowa Hospital.

According to William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS, no fatalities were recorded. However, the drivers of the other two vehicles were rushed to Union Hospital as they had suffered serious injuries and are currently in a stable condition.

“The cause of the accident is undetermined,” said Ntladi.

“The EMPD has launched an investigation into the matter.”

Elaine van Deventer, a Lambton resident, said, “Sinclair Road is an extremely busy road not only with vehicles.

“Our main concern is the pedestrians who walk to and from the schools and crèches adjacent to the road.

“The vehicles race up and down Sinclair Road at all times of the day and night and the stop sign on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Sinclair Road gets ignored.

“We have tried to get the metro involved in placing speed humps and traffic circles, but we have had no success for over a year.”

The GCN requested comment from the metro on the issue of traffic-calming measures after the incident, as well as on previous occasions, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
