Forty-two suspects nabbed in Katlehong over the Easter weekend

Katlehong police share their weekend arrest statistics.

While many Katlehong community members took a well-deserved rest over the Easter weekend, the Katlehong police were hard at work.

Officers from the Katlehong police’s Crime Prevention Unit arrested 42 suspects with the help of the EMPD.

The suspects were arrested for various offences in a number of different operations held between April 19 and 22.

Charges included assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, domestic violence, possession of suspected stolen goods, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, shoplifting, reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and house break-in and theft.

Among the arrested suspects was a 29-year-old who was arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition in Khumalo Valley.

“It is alleged officers were on patrol when they noticed two men acting suspiciously,” said spokesperson for the Katlehong police Capt Mega Ndobe.

“When the police tried to stop them the men ran away.

“They gave chase on foot and managed to grab one of the men.”

While searching the suspect, officers found a 9mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition in his possession.

“The weapon’s serial number had been filed off and the man could not give officers a valid firearm licence,” said Ndobe.

He was arrested and taken to the Katlehong Police Station.

“The firearm will be taken for ballistics testing for further investigation,” Ndobe said.

All of the arrested suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where their cases were postponed for various reasons.

Katlehong SAPS station commander Brig Sammy Thambo thanked everyone who contributed to the successful arrests.

He further encouraged the Katlehong community to come together and work with the police in the fight against crime.

“Police cannot win the battle against crime alone,” he said.

“We need the community’s involvement.”
